Parks on the Air (POTA) & Portable Operations
Welcome to amateur radio’s fastest-growing outdoor adventure sport. Parks on the Air (POTA) bridges portable radio operations with natural spaces. Instead of operating from a permanent home shack, “Activators” pack up lightweight, battery-powered transceivers, hike out into state or national parks, and deploy temporary antennas to make global contacts.
For hams living in neighborhoods with strict HOA antenna restrictions, POTA offers the ultimate escape. It provides a pristine radio environment with a virtually non-existent noise floor, allowing low-power (QRP) signals to break across oceans cleanly.
π² Coastal Carolina Activation Hub
Our regional coastline along the North and South Carolina border is packed with premier, high-activity POTA locations. Whether you are hunting stations from home (“Chasing”) or taking your rig out to the field (“Activating”), here are our primary local target zones:
- Brunswick Town / Fort Anderson State Historic Site: Designator K-6850 (NC)
- Green Swamp Preserve: Designator K-6869 (NC)
- Myrtle Beach State Park: Designator K-2940 (SC)
- Huntington Beach State Park: Designator K-2928 (SC)
π The Portable Field Pack Sandbox
A typical modern portable station is designed to fit inside a single standard backpack. Operations focus on deployment speed, efficient battery conservation, and high-performance wire configurations:
- Power Supplies: Utilizing lightweight, high-density Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery packs.
- Antenna Rigging: Deploying rapid-assembly resonant end-fed half-wave (EFHW) wires or portable vertical masts pulled up into tree canopies using simple throw weights.
π Official POTA Operating Resources
To register your callsign, track active spots live from the field, or log your portable operations, utilize the official open-source program portals:
- π Official POTA Landing Page β Register your callsign, view international rules, and track your performance awards.
- π Live POTA Activator Spotting Board β The real-time dashboard used to hunt active portable stations across the globe right now.
- πΊοΈ POTA Map Network β An interactive geographic directory to find park boundaries and official reference designators near Brunswick County.
π Tips for Your Very First Activation
You don’t need a massive high-power amplifier or an expensive specialized station to activate a park! A simple technician-class handheld or a modest 20-watt mobile rig is completely capable of completing an official activation.
- π The Rule of 10: To claim a successful, official park activation, you must secure a minimum of 10 verified contacts while operating within the designated park boundaries.
- π‘ Hunting the Chasers: You don’t have to call CQ blindly. You can check the live spotter board, tune your dial to an active frequency, and log other operators to get your feet wet.
